Title Evolution of bursts onsets during the development of cortical cultures
Text Dense neuronal cultures demonstrate gradual emergence of spontaneous synchronized bursting activity during their first weeks in vitro. It was shown that networks of neurons that are cultured on multi-electrode arrays are able to learn by modification of bursts'activation pattern [1]. It makes possible the study of bursting activity in developing neuronal culture.
We use the data on spontaneous spiking activity recorded starting from 4th to 35th day in vitro [2]. Following the general scheme outlined in [3] bursting events were detected first, then for every burst feature a vector of its activation pattern was calculated as a set of delays on every electrode from the burst onset. On the next step the distance matrices between all detected bursts were calculated and used for the hierarchical agglomerative clustering of bursts. This analysis confirmed the previous finding [3] that spontaneous synchronized activity in mature culture can be described by a limited (1-3) number of activation patterns. Moreover, our study demonstrates that during the first days, in vitro patterns of neuronal activations are very diverse. As the culture develops, a small number of the burst activation motifs become dominant and persists in the late days. We also found that signatures of these dominant patterns appear on the very first days.
